Towards widespread monitoring of prices along the food supply chain:
NILF at the 2nd OECD Food Chain Network meeting

Over 100 delegates from governments, private sector and private sector associations, international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and academia attended the 2nd OECD Food Chain Network meeting in Paris (12-13 September). The Network provides a platform for the exchange of information and ideas among OECD members and interested parties on issues related to food price formation and the sustainability of food value chains. The agenda for the 2nd Network Meeting covered these two broad topics: building of sustainable food chains; and food price monitoring and transparency. The two days allowed for several presentations and roundtable discussion sessions between the interested institutional stakeholders including several actors from the private sector. The meeting was part of the ongoing OECD initiatives aiming for a more transparent, efficient and sustainable food sector.

The first day of the meeting was devoted to the issues surrounding sustainability and food chains. Ensuring sustainable food systems remains one of the priorities for the Committee for Agriculture and special interest was placed on the role of public policy – especially after the numerous initiatives taken by the private sector and NGOs. The second day was devoted to issues related to price formation, transmission and transparency along the food value chain. Discussions focused on the relevant activities by OECD members as well as the private sector’s vision of the issues.

The overall agenda of the meeting reflects the growing interest on the structure and performance of food supply chains. In particular the issues of food price monitoring and research received special attention with several presentations covering a number of food price monitoring tools, including the European Food Prices Monitoring Tool , the French Observatory of Food Quality (Oqali) , the Spanish Food Price Observatory of the MARM, as well as relevant tools from Mexico . In addition, a recent report by the Netherlands Competition Authority (NMa) was circulated to delegates and is available on the Network’s website.

Efficiency, transparency and sustainability emerge as central themes in building modern food systems and supply chains.

Some of the presentations and the materials from the meeting are available online.
